Protecting resources, promoting safety

Occupational safety and environmental protection are firmly embedded in our corporate culture. In 2025, we once again implemented numerous initiatives to further improve the safety of our Value Creators’ day-to-day work while at the same time underscoring our responsibility for the environment and climate. Our initiatives conserve resources, reduce emissions and create sustainable progress, as the following examples illustrate.

Campaign promotes safety awareness among employees

Promoting safe behavior in everyday life
At our sites in Nuremberg and Odelzhausen (Germany), we focused on integrating safety into day-to-day work. In order to raise awareness of potential dangers, we created a poster campaign to highlight sources of danger and thus promote safe behavior.

Another example of how SFS raises safety awareness comes from our Schramberg site (Germany). We designed mirror stickers and affixed them to surfaces around the site as a daily reminder for employees that safety depends not only on rules, but above all on our own behavior. This simple idea has proven to be an effective way of keeping the topic of workplace safety permanently in the spotlight.

Solar-powered compressed air system
Our site in Nantong (China) has the country’s first compressed air system that runs entirely on solar power. With an output of 7 MW, the photovoltaic system can supply it with all the energy it needs during the day. State-of-the-art centrifugal compressors also reduce energy consumption by 20%, while an intelligent control system boosts reliability by 40%. This system enables us to save 1.18 million kWh of electricity every year and avoid around 800 metric tons of CO2 emissions. The solar power system increases the site’s share of renewable energy to 36%.

Heating pipeline from SFS to SAW

New district heating pipeline reduces CO2 emissions
SFS commissioned a district heating pipeline at the Heerbrugg (Switzerland) site in the fall of 2025. It transfers heating energy from the large heat pump and the waste heat from the compressed air center to the neighboring SAW plant. This allows existing energy sources to be used efficiently and replaces fossil fuel heating systems.

With an output of around 400 kW, the line supplies around 800,000 kWh of heat per year – enough to heat three buildings and completely decommission both the old oil heating system and the groundwater heat pump. This reduces our CO2 emissions by around 150 metric tons per year.

The project creates a win-win situation for both companies: SFS boosts the efficiency of its own energy supply, while SAW gains access to a reliable and sustainable heat source. The infrastructure is also designed in a way that makes it possible to connect additional buildings in the future.

Conservation of resources and digitalization
At the Pordenone (Italy) site, SFS conducted a comprehensive analysis of its compressed air circuit. By gradually reducing the operating pressure, we found a level that both saves energy and maintains production processes without any restrictions. This reduces our annual energy consumption by 20 MWh.

Digitalization also contributes to environmental protection: In Torbali (Turkey), the results of the hardness tests in the induction hardening process have been transferred directly to the quality software since 2025. This has eliminated the need to print out around 2,400 test reports every year. In addition to paper and energy savings, production employees now also benefit from immediate digital access to all relevant data.
