Expansion of the newly created medtech production platform

The medical device industry is a fast-growing global business. Trends including general population growth, an aging baby boomer generation and an increasing incidence of chronic diseases have boosted demand for healthcare products and services. This leads to a sustained growth for the medical device sector. The market growth in combination with cost-cutting pressure and high quality requirements, and the need for partners with global reach, were the forces behind the decision to revise SFS’s medtech strategy. SFS is expanding its global production capacity in the medical device business by investing in major plant expansions in the US and Switzerland in order to serve customers in North America and, in the future in Europe and Asia, under the Tegra Medical brand.

'Local-for-local' strategy extended to cover medical device business

Based in North and Central America, Tegra Medical is a leading partner in the development, manufacture and supply of medical devices, and has been part of the SFS family since 2016 as Division Medical. Thanks to intensive cooperation and the integration of existing SFS sites in Switzerland, Malaysia and China, local supply services will be offered to medical device customers in Europe and Asia in the future. To meet the growing needs of the medical market, global growth will be accompanied and reinforced by local capacity expansion in Franklin (US), Hernando (US) and Hallau (Switzerland).

Jens Breu CEO SFS Group AG
“A relationship based on partnership and trust with our customers is in our DNA, so naturally we are thrilled to increase our local presence in the medical sector and move closer to our customers in Europe and Asia.”

Strengthen global customer relationships

All medical activities of SFS Group previously conducted in the Medical, Electronics and Industrial divisions are thus now combined under the Tegra Medical brand in the Medical division.
Walter Kobler Head of Industrial division and Medical division
“The expansion of our facilities enables us to fuel Tegra Medical’s dynamic growth.”

Substantial expansion of existing locations

The new strategy involves a change in management at the Medical division. Walter Kobler, head of the Industrial division and a long-standing member of the Group Executive Board, took over the helm at the Medical division effective 1 January 2021. Jens Breu, CEO of SFS Group, had been in charge of the Medical division on an interim basis.

New building in Franklin (US) at Tegra Medical headquarters

A newly acquired building in Franklin adds another 11,000 m2 of production space to the existing building at Tegra Medical headquarters in the same industrial park. The Quick Wire & Tubing unit, which specializes in wire and hypotubing, will have its own designated area. Additional manufacturing units will follow soon after.

The building extension at the Hernando site will house a new manufacturing cell with state-of-the-art automated systems – this will increase the technological level by merging multiple production steps, making operations faster and more efficient.

The expansion in Hallau will increase production capacity significantly, in particular for cleanroom micromolding, and provide more space for assembly and administrative operations.
